Six Paupers Tavern & Restaurant is a family run business operated by brothers Michael and Stephen Lucey. Both natives of Wilmington Delaware, Mike and Steve opened their first restaurant, Dead Presidents Pub, in 1997. Based on that success they plotted the course for a larger restaurant with two decks and private banquet facilities. Six Paupers opened on May 10th 2004 and is housed in the former Shields Lumber Warehouse building in the heart of historic Hockessin.
The name Six Paupers was taken from the first hand written census of Hockessin which declared that there were "six paupers living within city limits" at the time. Every effort was made in design and construction of Six Paupers to reflect the classic historic vibe of Hockessin and nearby towns of Chadds Ford and Kennett Square. Etched glass doors, original local artwork, reclaimed barn wood bar floors, two custom mahogany bars, a casually elegant dining area and two decks all add to the modern rusticity and charm of Six Paupers.
In 2009, in part due to the overwhelming success of Six Paupers, Michael and Stephen Lucey sold Dead Presidents.
Banquet facilities are available for business meetings, birthday parties, rehearsal dinners, happy hours or any get-together. We are family friendly and serve a "Little Paupers" menu seven days a week (see our Lunch and Dinner menus for details).
